{"id":7155,"date":"2024-03-07T00:46:43","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T00:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/demo5.dedicatedhost247.com\/zexo\/meta-is-building-a-giant-ai-model-to-power-its-entire-video-ecosystem-exec-says\/"},"modified":"2024-03-07T00:46:43","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T00:46:43","slug":"meta-is-building-a-giant-ai-model-to-power-its-entire-video-ecosystem-exec-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/demo5.dedicatedhost247.com\/zexo\/meta-is-building-a-giant-ai-model-to-power-its-entire-video-ecosystem-exec-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta is building a giant AI model to power its &#8216;entire video ecosystem,&#8217; exec says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107279979\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Omar Marques | Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\">Meta&#8217;s<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> hefty investment in artificial intelligence includes development of an AI system designed to power Facebook&#8217;s entire video recommendation engine across all its platforms, a company executive said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/about.meta.com\/media-gallery\/executives\/tom-alison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Alison<\/a>, the head of Facebook, said part of Meta&#8217;s &#8220;technology roadmap that goes to 2026&#8221; involves developing an AI recommendation model that can power both the company&#8217;s TikTok-like Reels short video service and more traditional, longer videos.<\/p>\n<p>To date, Meta has typically used a separate model for each of its products, such as Reels, Groups and the core Facebook Feed, Alison said onstage at Morgan Stanley&#8217;s tech conference in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>As part of Meta&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/16\/metas-open-source-approach-to-ai-puzzles-wall-street-techies-love-it.html\">ambitious foray into AI<\/a>, the company has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/18\/mark-zuckerberg-indicates-meta-is-spending-billions-on-nvidia-ai-chips.html\">spending billions of dollars<\/a> on Nvidia graphics processing units, or GPUs. They&#8217;ve become the primary chips used by AI researchers for training the types of large language models used to power OpenAI&#8217;s popular ChatGPT chatbot and other generative AI models.<\/p>\n<p>Alison said &#8220;phase 1&#8221; of Meta&#8217;s tech roadmap involved switching the company&#8217;s current recommendation systems to GPUs from more traditional computer chips, helping to improve the overall performance of products.<\/p>\n<p>As interest in LLMs exploded last year, Meta executives were struck by how these big AI models could &#8220;handle lots of data and all kinds of very general-purpose types of activities like chatting,&#8221; Alison said. Meta came to see the possibility of a giant recommendation model that could be used across products, and by last year, built &#8220;this kind of new model architecture,&#8221; Alison said, adding that the company tested it on Reels.<\/p>\n<p>This new &#8220;model architecture&#8221; helped Facebook obtain &#8220;an 8% to 10% gain in Reels watch time&#8221; on the core Facebook app, which Alison said helped prove that the model was &#8220;learning from the data much more efficiently than the previous generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve really focused on kind of investing more in making sure that we can scale these models up with the right kind of hardware,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meta is now in &#8220;phase 3&#8221; of its re-architecture of the system, which involves trying to validate the technology and push it across multiple products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107374850\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107374850\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000331860\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Instead of just powering Reels, we&#8217;re working on a project to power our entire video ecosystem with this single model, and then can we add our Feed recommendation product to also be served by this model,&#8221; Alison said. &#8220;If we get this right, not only will the recommendations be kind of more engaging and more relevant, but we think the responsiveness of them can improve as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Illustrating out how it will work if successful, Alison said, &#8220;If you see something that you&#8217;re into in Reels, and then you go back to the Feed, we can kind of show you more similar content.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alison said Meta has accumulated a massive stockpile of GPUs that will be used to help its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/27\/meta-ceo-zuckerberg-looks-to-digital-assistants-ai-to-push-metaverse.html\"> broader generative AI efforts<\/a>, such as development of digital assistants.<\/p>\n<p>Some generative AI projects Meta is considering include incorporating more sophisticated chatting tools into its core Feed so a person who sees a &#8220;recommended post about Taylor Swift,&#8221; could perhaps &#8220;easily just click a button and say, &#8216;Hey Meta AI, tell me more about what I&#8217;m seeing with Taylor Swift right now.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meta is also experimenting with integrating its AI chatting tool within Groups, so a member of a Facebook baking group could potentially ask a question about desserts and get an answer from a digital assistant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we have the opportunity to put generative AI in kind of a multiplayer kind of consumer environment,&#8221; Alison said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2024\/02\/16\/watch-cnbcas-full-interview-with-metaas-nick-clegg.html\">CNBC&#8217;s full interview with Meta&#8217;s Nick Clegg<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107374853\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107374853\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000331861\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107374854-17080988051708098799-33359359765-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1708098804&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Watch CNBC&#x2019;s full interview with Meta&#x2019;s Nick Clegg\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><em><strong>Don&#8217;t miss these stories from CNBC PRO:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Omar Marques | Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images Meta&#8217;s hefty investment in artificial intelligence includes development of an AI system designed to power Facebook&#8217;s entire video recommendation engine across all its platforms, a company executive said Wednesday.
