Grand Canyon hotels were forced to shut down<\/a> ahead of the busy Labor Day weekend because a half-century-old pipeline that brings water to the region ruptured, park officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n A “series of four significant breaks in the 12 \u00bd mile-long Transcanyon Waterline that supplies water from the canyon for use in the park” has resulted in no potable water “being pumped to either the South or North Rim,” the N<\/a>ational Park Service s<\/a>aid in a s<\/a>tatement<\/a>.<\/p>\n The El Tovar<\/a> Hotel, Bright Angel Lodge<\/a>, Maswik Lodge<\/a>, Phantom Ranch<\/a>, Yavapai Lodge<\/a> and Trailer Village<\/a> RV Park were all forced to turn away customers staying Thursday night.<\/p>\n Hotels outside the park in nearby Tusayan were still operating, officials said.<\/p>\n Camping will still be permitted with working faucets in bathrooms \u2014 though spigot “access at campgrounds on the South Rim will be turned off,” officials said.<\/p>\n And no fires will be allowed on the South Rim and inner canyon areas, which includes prohibitions on all\u00a0wood burning and charcoal\u00a0fires, campfires, warming\u00a0fires and charcoal barbecues.<\/p>\n The Transcanyon Waterline, built in the 1960s, \u201chas exceeded its expected lifespan and experiences frequent failures,\u201d the park service said.<\/p>\n![\"Bright](\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-08\/240829-bright-angel-lodge-al-0938-89a04a.jpg\")
