Soft ripened cheeses sold by retailers including Aldi and Market Basket<\/a>\u00a0and are being recalled because they may be tainted with listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A separate but related recall<\/a>, which involved turkey sandwiches containing recalled cheese and distributed in six states, was posted on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., listeria infection sickens 1,600 and kills 260 people a year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0estimates<\/a>. The young, elderly and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk, and listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, the FDA and CDC noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n
