href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\">Apple&#8217;s<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> app store, underscoring concerns that TikTok will soon be effectively banned in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>RedNote, or Xiaohongshu, as it&#8217;s known in China, is the No. 1 free app on the <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\">Apple<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> app store as of Monday, followed by TikTok&#8217;s photo-sharing Lemon8 app and OpenAI&#8217;s ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/12\/tiktok-creators-ask-followers-to-migrate-ahead-of-ban-to-meta-youtube.html\">TikTok creators are rushing to find alternatives<\/a> where they can continue posting videos while waiting to see what happens with TikTok, which faces a potential Jan. 19 ban in the U.S. The Supreme Court held oral arguments last week about the April law setting the stage for a ban, and seemed to side more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/09\/supreme-court-set-to-hear-oral-arguments-on-challenge-to-tiktok-ban.html\">favorably with the U.S. government&#8217;s arguments<\/a> that ByteDance&#8217;s ownership of TikTok poses a national security risk.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys representing TikTok and creators argued that the law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/04\/doj-urges-supreme-court-to-reject-trump-request-to-delay-tiktok-ban-law.html\">violates<\/a> the free-speech protections of millions of its U.S. users.<\/p>\n<p>If the Supreme Court upholds the law, third-party service providers such as <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\">Apple<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\">Google<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> will be penalized for supporting TikTok, thus effectively banning the app in the U.S. It&#8217;s unclear whether President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, would choose to enforce the law.<\/p>\n<p>Some TikTok creators are enacting contingency plans by migrating to RedNote.<\/p>\n<p>One content creator, who goes by the username allieusyaps, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@allieusyaps\/video\/7459451460825287982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> Monday that while &#8220;it&#8217;s OK&#8221; that TikTok could be banned in the U.S., he and other TikTok creators &#8220;aren&#8217;t going back to Instagram and Facebook,&#8221; because they joined RedNote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look I might not have a job in the next week, but we about to learn Mandarin baby!&#8221; the user wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Another TikTok creator named Krystan Walmsley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@k.walmsley\/video\/7459418185671150894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> a short video teaching people how to set up and decorate their RedNote accounts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This app is so cute and it&#8217;s a lot of fun so far,&#8221; Walmsley said.<\/p>\n<p>RedNote, based in Shanghai, was founded in 2013, and has increasingly challenged <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BABA\/\">Alibaba<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and Douyin, ByteDance&#8217;s version of TikTok in China, in e-commerce and social media. It had about 300 million monthly active users as of July 2024, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/big-tech\/article\/3272070\/chinas-xiaohongshu-carves-out-niche-increasingly-crowded-e-commerce-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the South China Morning Post.<\/p>\n<p>RedNote was valued at $17 billion after raising funding in July from investors such as Boyu Capital and HongShan Capital Group, formerly Sequoia Capital&#8217;s Chinese investment arm, according to PitchBook.
