Ahead of the sale, RIL had entered into arrangements with 12 entities that took \u2060short positions \u200cin RPL futures contracts, with profits and losses from those trades ultimately accruing to the company.<\/p>\n<p> In its 2020 order, SEBI \u2060had ruled that the arrangement amounted to fraud and <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Markets#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/market-manipulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">market manipulation<\/a> as it circumvented position limits in derivatives, cornered the market and influenced settlement prices.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:none;\" data-ga-impression=\"Events_widget_$pagename#Impression#url\" class=\"liveEventMain_widget custom_ad\">\n<div class=\"topContain\">\n<div class=\"imgBox\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"logoTitle\">Live Events<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/live_events_widget.cms?pagename=articlepotime:1--><br \/> It had directed RIL to repay 4.47 billion rupees to investors.<\/p>\n<p> RIL challenged the order before the Securities Appellate Tribunal, which upheld SEBI&#8217;s findings, following which the company approached the Supreme Court. The apex court, however, held that a breach of position \u200climits is a regulatory violation but does not by itself establish fraud.
