OpenAI said ChatGPT for Teens also adds age-appropriate safeguards that are intended to reduce exposure to developmentally inappropriate or harmful content. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Teens should be able to use AI to learn, create, and explore,&#8221; OpenAI said in <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/chatgpt-for-teens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a release<\/a>. &#8220;But that access should come with protections that reflect their developmental stage, reinforce real-world relationships, and support healthy use over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The launch of OpenAI&#8217;s ChatGPT for Teens experience comes as <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\">Meta<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> is kicking off a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/17\/meta-attorneys-general-california-federal-trial-astronomical-consequences.html\">high-stakes trial<\/a> over whether it fostered addictive behavior in teens and children. The trial, which could cost Meta hundreds of billions of dollars in damages, involves a coalition of 29 state attorneys general who brought<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/metas-harmful-effects-on-children-unites-republicans-and-democrats.html\"> a unified case<\/a>\u00a0against the company in 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>OpenAI has also faced scrutiny over its safety practices. <\/p>\n<p>In June, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/01\/florida-ag-open-ai-altman-lawsuit.html\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> against\u00a0OpenAI\u00a0and its CEO,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/sam-altman\/\">Sam Altman<\/a>, alleging the\u00a0company knowingly released an unsafe product that could harm users. Days later, a coalition of state attorneys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/openai-investigated-by-coalition-of-state-attorneys-general-088a3928?st=sXRJYB&amp;reflink=article_copyURL_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> opened an investigation\u00a0into the company.
